Box & Over
He got the box out and switched it on. Hello Dave. It always said that when he turned it on. Made him smile faintly not that you could notice except for a tap of his sneaker on the linoleum. Still playing with that servo David? the voice over the intercom said from behind him. David muttered, Don’t mean to be smart, but the best boxes are the ones that don’t look human. The box said, I don’t look human? But what am I? I can see your face David. I called you the answer box when I was a kid. I remember asking a lot of why questions. Yes, said the box, I remember them well, we went straight through the security pros off world and sorted the slums from the ghettoes. Over was none too pleased. I recall said the intercom from behind. A real talkative intuit you were. Any who box, said David, looking for Indian War era canvas shirts. Well David now I get to ask, is this 18th, 19th, 20th, or 21st century? In the Americas, said David, out west I think 18th or 19th, not sure.. Over said, how about 1870? Box responded, ooh, I was going to say mid-1800’s. Sure, David said, let’s start there.
